In August, Boston Big Local helped to create some summer holiday fun for families by funding activities at Central Park. The free “Summer Beach” sessions were delivered over two days and involved transforming a section of the park into a beach area using 25 tonnes of sand. Families were given the opportunity to take part in ‘seaside’ fun activities such as sandcastle building competitions, donkey rides, a Punch and Judy show, beach volleyball, arts and crafts and face-painting.
Families were encouraged to bring their deck chairs and picnics to enjoy a day on “Boston beach” and more than 4,000 people attended during the two day event.
Boston Big Local Chair, Richard Tory said: “A beach day in Boston was one of the suggestions made by local residents and the event has exceeded our expectations. People voted with their feet and came along to support it. It’s given families a chance to enjoy some summer fun, even if they can’t get to the seaside.”
The initiative is part of Boston big Local’s aim of improving local amenities and open spaces in the area under the theme of creating a more attractive environment. The event was funded by Boston Big Local and supported by partner agencies Mayflower Housing, Family Action, Boston Children’s Centre, Transported Arts and Boston United in the Community.
