Boston Big Local has provided £22k of funding to support Blackfriars Arts Centre’s efforts to install a new lift at the theatre. The lift will take people from the foyer to the first floor of the building and will give improved access to the upstairs bar, ‘Upper Rooms’, and the top half of the auditorium.
The installation of the lift has been made possible by two donations: the one from Boston Big Local and a legacy grant from Peter and Dot Hugh for £11k.
Rob Barclay, a trustee of Blackfriars, said: “This is a big step forward for improving the general accessibility of the theatre. We have had to turn room bookings away in the past, but now we are able to offer full access to our first floor. This will go a long way in helping to improve the sustainability of the building going forward. It also helps give improved access to our patrons visiting the theatre to watch a show and we’re really looking forward to having the work completed during August.”
Boston Big Local Chair, Richard Tory, said: “We are a partnership led by residents who decide how the £1m Big Local funding should be invested, based on local concerns and priorities. We chose to help fund the installation of a lift at the theatre so that more people can access the fantastic performances and activities that take place at the venue.”
Works are planned to take place during the theatre’s annual two week shut down in August. The lift will be operational for the start of the Autumn programming season.
