“Young skin is very delicate and can be easily damaged by the sun - so it’s important that children protect themselves from the sun’s rays,” says Botolph the Boston Big Local bear. “If you have fair hair, red hair, light-coloured eyes or freckles you should take extra care in the sun.”
Wear a hat: protect your head, shoulders and neck by wearing a sun hat with a wide brim, or a legionnaire hat.
Apply sunscreen before you go outside: children should use factor 30+ sunscreen if they are going outside. Reapply the sunscreen regularly if you stay outdoors for a long time. As well as your arms and legs, don’t forget to put sunscreen on your shoulders, ears, nose and cheeks and the tops of your feet.
Protect yourself when splashing around: always use waterproof sunscreen if you are swimming or playing outdoors with water.
Be cool, wear glasses: wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun.
Go under cover: protect your skin by wearing loose-fitting cotton clothes, such as a long-sleeved t-shirt or a sunsuit. Find a shady spot to play in or sit under a sun canopy.
Stay sun-safe at school: put sunscreen on before you set off for school. Wear a sun hat if you go outside at playtime or during your lunch break.
Don’t let the clouds fool you: the sun can burn you, even on a cloudy day. Always take care to protect yourself.
